Yay for me

I just got word that one of my poems has been accepted in Barbaric Yawp! It appears quarterly, and is a really cool 60pg periodical.

I'm excited, though they picked a pretty personal poem, one that I haven't shown my parents. Yikes, to tell them, or not to tell them...that is the question.

Yay for me. :)

Congratulations, Aimee!

I know what you mean about "to tell them or not to tell them." It turns out my graduation reading at Spalding is on graduation day, so my parents, siblings, husband, et al will be there. I very much want them to be there, but now I'm nervous about which poems to read. This could open a huge emotional can o' worms. Actually, in my family's case it may be a barrel o' monkeys.

THIS FROM GWEN--I've been through the same situation. I think it's best to talk to your family in general terms in advance. Say something like -- "I'm not sure you'll like all my poems. Do you want to read them so we can talk about them?" I have talked this way to my mother, sisters, daughters, husband. My sisters brush it off and say, "You can write anything about us and don't even bother to show it to us." My husband has been surprisingly liberal, allowing me to write and read poems in public that reveal personal stuff about our marriage. So I say go for the "let's talk" approach. No one will be helped by trying to keep it a secret. It will out eventually!

Good luck and congratulations, Aimee!

Congratulations! Can't wait to read it myself! Tell your parents, they do love you unconditionally, you know that. Best wishes, Amylang

YARPS and congratulations, Aimee!

(I hope I can have some news like that myself soon...)

But I know that feeling...I've actually gone all the way back to "to write or not to write" because of my family. It has been a huge battle I've had to fight through. There is not really ever a good enough reason not to write a poem at all. <3
